Star Citizen’s first-person module was shown off in detail during its fan event at PAX Australia overnight, detailing the module’s shooting, perspective, animation and environmental features.
According to Cloud Imperium Games founder, Chris Roberts, whatever the in-game character is doing in third-person, the animation is exactly what they are doing in first-person. The rigs are all of the same and feature the same animation. The demo also highlighted combat in zero-gravity environments, as well as how weapons “shoot were the gun is pointing.”
Roberts first teased the module during Gamescom earlier this year and revealed that developer of Nexuiz for the Xbox 360 and PC, Illfonic, is the studio working on the first-person module. There is a lot more polish to be added to the first-person shooting component of the space exploration title before it launches late next year. For example, the animations shown are not 100 percent complete as a final motion capture performance is slated to begin early next year. Realistic physics destructible and environments will also be added before its release.
The developer also revealed that while Arena Commander version 0.9.2 rolled out last week, upcoming Arena Commander 1.0 will include a lobby system and major improvements when it launches later this year. This includes updates to Broken Moon and Dying Star, New horizon Speedway, missile and countermeasure gameplay, proximity warnings, spectator and cinematic cameras, and leaderboard.
According to the updated Star Citizen roadmap, the developer will roll out the following in approximate order next year; FPS module, planetside/social module, Arena Commander 2.0 multi-crew module, Squadron 42 Chapter One and planetside expands to persistent universe alpha. Squadron 42 Chapter One is slated to launch “early next year sometime” and is 15-20 hours long.
The space exploration sim is currently close to achieving $60 million USD in funding. It manoeuvred past the $56 and $55 million USD goals last month, achieving the title of largest crowdfunded project ever, beyond video games and any campaign on Kickstarter or similar sites to date.
